Found this in the tC section, but I'm sure not all of us go there. It's about a wheels expiration date.

I work for one of Canada’s largest scrap tire haulers and I know tires extremely well. I my experience the tread separating from the tire am usually the result of several factors, including tire air pressure.

Most factors with tire wear can be contributed to tire air pressure.

I am not saying that a tire cant "DRY OUT" I am sure I somewhat can, however it would not to the point to causing a tire to separate like that.

I am not looking argue with anyone, I am sure others will have their opinions.

Just remember tires are like most other car components, you need to take care of them, Check air pressure, rotate them and inspect them each season.

After all you would not wait until your motor started to run rough before you get an oil change. Would you?

I have had problems with many "new" old tires. I have dealt with quite a few older restored cars over the years. Many of these cars see very few miles a year and are kept inside (less UV exposure), and have "new" old tires on them. They blow out pretty often.

I have had experience with at least 3 sets of "new" old tires personally. These tires gave poor service insluding belt seperation and blow-out. From what I have seen I would highly recommend that anyone having tires over about 6-8 years old on their car remove them from service immediately. They do not need to show visible signs of dry-rot to be dangerous IMO. If there are any signs (even slight cracking) of dry-rot, I would not use them. I also highly recommend that when purchasing tires check the date codes and be sure you are getting NEW tires not "new" tires. Having worked at a local tire store for a bit (big chain) I can tell you for sure that you can easily buy some very old brand new tires. (I found a couple tires that were 14 years old)

I never knew about this until yesterday. I looked at one of the stock ones on mine today quick and saw it was made the same year as my car, I'm sure you'd find a lot of old ones from tire places like wal-mart and pep boys though, especially ordered online.

I knew about the DOT tire born date and kinda knew about how old tires are being sold as new. In the case of that story I see a huge factor of why the tire blew out. The new tires were being stored outside in the heat and UV sunlight which will make them old prematurely.
I feel if a tire is properly stored inside they will last much longer than only 6 years. My Pirellis on the TRDs were made in late 03' and my stock Goodyears were made in mid 04' according to the DOT dates.
Since most all my tires are kept indoors when not in use I have zero problems using them up to about 15 years of age as long as they are not dry rotting around the mounting beads.
