First I want to thank everyone here for helping me to understand why I had not been happy with Mobil 1 "Synthetic" for the past several years.
I KNEW something was not quite right, but could not put my finger on it.

Well, I made a change this past Wednesday.
I went to PEP BOYS and purchased Royal Purple SYNTHETIC (5W-30).

Man! What a difference!
- Not quite the same grand difference as when I changed to M1 over 25 years ago from Quaker State regular oil.
In this case, it was about a 50% amazement factor.:D

The engine IMMEDIATELY quieted down to a well oiled precision machine sound.
Initial driving shows a bit more "umph" going up steep hills.
- Not able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, though. :silly:

Hate to burst everones bubble, but you should look into the UOAs of RP in Gen 1 xB motors.

Generally, you get high levels of aluminum and iron (shows piston scuffing) and high levels of lead and copper (bearings) when running 5w30 RP in an xB.

Just to be totally clear, I am speaking ONLY of synthetics when I mentioned all those companies - I do not know what dino oil is best in our motors.

Why do you like it?

Price range is a moot point IMO. I am only concerned with performance and protection qualities of an oil, not marketing hype, popularity or cost. UOAs are the only way to evaluate how well an oil performs, and all the UOAs I have seen (Amsoil, RP, M1, QS, Castrol, Pennzoil, Elf, Valvoline, and a few other obscure brands I cant think of off the top of my head) show Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 to be best in Gen 1 xb motors. PP can be found anytime for about $6/qt. Sometimes you can buy up to 6 quarts and send in for a mail-in rebate, bringing the cost down to $1.99/qt.

Remember, there is no correct answer to the question of what is the "best oil" - what works well in one type of motor can be poop in another. UOAs are the ONLY way to tell what your motor likes best. I have seen the reports with my own eyes and make my decisions on what oil to buy based strictly on the data UOAs provide.

RP are expensive,
I am using Pennzoil Platinum now, they were "buy 1 get 1 free" So i have 2 cases of them .

I might switch back to RP after i am done with Pennzoil.

$8/quart is too rich for my blood, especially for a $15K economy car.

been using PP for the last year in mine. After the first change I was amazed at how much crap it cleaned out. It ran so smooth and even had a slight mpg gain. I highly recommend it.

I thought Scion recommended Mobil 1 synthetic in our cars? That's what I've always ran in my tC. Is M1 really that much worse than RP/Penzoil, etc.?

Ive been using Penzoil Platinum 5w-30 since I first changed the oil. That was 20k ago. My neighbor across the street is captain oil on some forums and message boards. After having some chats with him, and doing some research on my own, I came up with that as a plan. 19 bucks for a 5 quart container at wally world. Every 5th oil change is free. I was a Castrol guy for decades. Now Im hooked on group IV. And I change it out every 3500 or so. Ive been using purolator filters, but Im going with wix next time.

Not trying to be a pain but just wondering where you guys are getting the oil charts from. I am 18 and own an xb and would like to keep it running correct. Asidie from being this young I am also a toyota certified technician and also hold 6 ASE's. I do have some automotive knowledge but haven't gotten to see these charts and would like to help. If someone could send me a link for them I will gladly go through them and decide for all of us what seems to be best for our cars. I have went from regular toyota oil which is the same as penzoil to mobil one synthetic to castrol syntech and now to mobil ones fuel economy 0w30 oil and have been writing down and saving gas mileage numbers the whole time. The best I have seen was 41 mpg with mobil one 5w30 synthetic. I too am interested in trying a different oil so if any one has the charts it would be greatly appreciated.
