|
|
I just read this in Road & Track....
Super Coupe. Not the LF-A supercar and certainly not simply a revised SC430, this Lexus coupe caught testing could well be a serious competitor to the likes of BMW's 6 Series. Although the right-hand-drive prototype is carrying the Japan-market Toyota Crown Royal sedan bodywork, there is no denying the shortened roof and small rear doors mark this clearly as a coupe. The 4-outlet exhaust hints at the V-8 and will power the new rear-driver; and don't rule out all-wheel drive. -MM |

| It's a "4-door" coupe? Wouldn't it be a sedan? |

| So smaller doors in the rear make it a coupe :P Well since its right hand drive, doubt it is really marketed for the US anyway. 4 outlet exhaust hints at a v8 don't rule out all wheel drive. and don't rule out a sub 40k price range either. |

| You guys didn't read it! That is a body from a Crown that they are using for testing, it couldn't POSSIBLY go into production with those tiny rear doors... how silly. :) |

Mercedes has a 4 door coupe. And it looks dam sexy, so I wouldn't say the doors are out completely. For thier target market those rear doors make sense for people who want a sports coupe, but also want 4 doors too.
Coupes with 3/4 doors came out with Saturn SC2 (if there was a car before that im not aware) and then the Saturn Quad-Coupe. They are also on the RX8. They are doors that have to have the regular door open to access, but they are still a nice feature.
This coupe like the mercedes is mostly saying its a 'coupe' because it has the body style of a coupe with 4 doors instead of a sedan with two doors. |

| The Mercedes CLS is just a sedan that is designed to look coupe-ish, but this Lexus appears to be a coupe platform that is being tested with a sedan body on it... maybe the coupe body isn't ready to be used, or maybe it is too secret, etc. |

what do you mean coupe platform?!
sedan = 4 drs
coupe = 2 drs
there are no underling differences between say a grand am, and a grand am coupe.
or a monte carlo and an impala
or a accord or an accord coupe.
jsut doors. just body. of course there are engine options, etc... but u get my point. |

| OK, OK, you are right... the platform encompasses a wide variety of cars... coupes, sedans, wagons, etc. That was a slipup on my part. What I mean is that the wheelbase and rear-door length on that test mule is obviously going to end up as a coupe because no one would ever want to buy a high-end luxury car with 24" rear doors. :) |

Performance wise, it sounds very interesting (V-8 AWD :ponder: ) ~ that aspect alone, would get me to consider it.
As for styling, its too much within the box.
It seems like its slightly heading back to the old skoo ES/GS style (circa '90s) with a larger grill and new skoo LS headlights. From this angle it looks like the tail lights are similar to the LS also.
In my opinion its has the performance that people are asking for... However, styling needs to take a step outside the box~ :ponder: ~Something that'll represent its speed when its not even moving. |

| I wonder what's underneath....they did a good job hiding it and making it look like a procution car compared to most "mules' you see |

Hmmm... thats interesting, I've never heard that explained before. I wonder if that is a standard definition or if its a regional thing. Makes some sense. |

They are not changing the design. . . it says so on the original post. It's a Toyota Crown body on something that is not a Crown. . . it's just a test mule. The Crown has been in production in Japan for over a year. |
